China, Japan's history talks

BEIJING (AFP) - China and Japan held a second day of sensitive talks on resolving bitter disputes over their shared history but experts saw little hope the vast gulf between the giants could be bridged.

Koji Okamoto, a professor emeritus of Asian history at Osaka International University, said the meeting was merely "camouflage" meant -- by political leaders of both sides -- to give the appearance of dialogue.

He noted the inclusion of ancient history in the talks, which he called an attempt by Japan to play up less-contentious eras.

"The Japanese can show that Sino-Japanese relations were not only about conflicts, but go back several thousand years and relations were originally good," he said.

"This gives the image of sharing opinions, although it's really camouflage."

Yang Yi, a leading academic at the National Defense University of China, wrote Wednesday in the state-controlled China Daily that "friendship and cooperation constitute the mainstream of the 2,000-year" history between the two.Wed Dec 27,

Another Chinese ex-editor of the magazine,"the freezing point" which was forced to discontinue to be published by CCP because it published the articles that dissent from the official history of China, said, "A Chinese historian represent the state, a Japanese historian talks about his own view as a scholar, the result is they keep talking without a consensus."

Still another Japanese historian warns, that in China, CCP interprets history.

Yomiuri editor suggests that it might be a good idea to have American historian join the meeting so that Chinese may not emotionally accuse Japanese scientific study of denying the crime Japan committed.
(For instance as for Nanjing massacre, China's official position is that more than 300,000 were victims, while the population at Nanjing turned out to be 200,000-250,000
.)

It might be camouflage, but the basic idea is good.
We should note the change of Chinese attitude toward Japan. It seems they are beginning to separate the issue of politics from that of history.
Besides if the result of disagreement is available to general public, the meeting is not entirely useless even in view of historical study.

The war in China before and during WWⅡ

In several posts, I have tried to show what we might call the Imperialistic struggles during WWⅡ among the Powers. And there were always victims. In particular, China is the most victimized nation. Yes, Japanese atrocity is eminent and the madness was beyond description.
But let's not forget there were power struggles among Chinese regimes and Chinese people were also oppressed, killed, massacred by them; for, it seems forgetting this fact, emphasizing their identity with their ethnicity, will leads to nationalistic view of history, to be used for blaming, bashing other nations, turning blind eye to their own wrongs. Of course it does not cansell what Japan did.It rather show the folly, irrational, dark and weak side of people, Japanese or Chinese or for that matter, anyone. Putting the human situation in wider perspective will help us to move from the view point of "I as Japanese/Chinese etc" to that of "we as human being "

From the earliest years to their final defeat on the mainland, the Nationalist likely killed from 5,965,000 to 18,522,000 helpless people, probably 10,214,000. This incredible number is over a million greater than all the aforementioned 8,963,000 war dead in all the hundreds of wars and rebellions in China from the beginning of the century to the Nationalist final defeat. It ranks the Nationalists as the fourth greatest demociders of this century, behind the Soviets, Chinese communists, and German Nazis. This democide is even more impressive when it is realized that the Nationalists never controlled all of China, perhaps no more than 50 too 60 percent of the population at its greatest.

Overall and quite aside from those killed in battle, the Japanese probably murdered 3,949,000 Chinese during the war; even possibly as many as 6,325,000. Some readers who were prisoners of the Japanese during the war or remember the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal revelations after the war will hardly be surprised by these numbers. What is shocking is that the Nationalist likely murdered some 2,000,000 more during the war, and that this toll, or something like it, is virtually unknown. Apparently the Nationalists got away with murder; responsible Japanese were tried as war criminals.

Up to October 1, 1949, when Mao Tse-tung officially proclaimed the Peoples Republic of China, the communists killed from 1,838,000 to 11,692,000 people, most likely some 3,466,000. This is about one-third the democide of the Nationalists. The communists usually controlled a much smaller population. But also, they treated their soldiers much better, the process of conscription was not a death trap, and officials and officers were far less corrupt and undisciplined. Thus, the population was less subject to the arbitrary killing by the communists; what killing did take place was often part of a program or campaign mapped out in advance. Even in newly conquered areas, when peasants spontaneously would take matters into their own hands, round up some hated local bullies or former officials and beat them to death, it generally was within the communist scheme. Otherwise, the party's Central Committee would have made reference to communist goals while instructing cadre to prevent such "anti-social action."CHINA'S

after the communist regime
Only when these movements and especially the final, total collectivization of the peasants and "Great Leap Forward" destroyed the agricultural system, causing the world's greatest recorded famine--27,000,000 starved too death9--did the communist begin to draw back from or slacken their drives. Shortly after this famine, in the mid-1960s, an intra-party civil war erupted between Mao Tse-tung and his followers, who wanted to continue the mass-based revolution, and a more moderate, pragmatically oriented faction. This "cultural revolution" probably cost 1,613,000 lives

Since 1949 the Chinese communists killed from 5,999,000 to 102,671,000 people; a prudent estimate is 35,236,000. When added to the number they murdered in previous years, the communists likely killed 38,702,000 Chinese, Tibetans, and other minorities.CHINA'S

Bluff?

TOKYO (AP) - The Japanese government recently looked into the possibility of developing a nuclear warhead, a news report said Monday, citing an internal government document.

Yasuhisa Shiozaki, the government's top spokesman, however, denied any knowledge of such a document.

The Japanese daily Sankei reported that experts at several government organizations concluded it would take at least three to five years to make a prototype weapon.

The experts also estimated that the project would cost about $1.68 billion to $2.52 billion and require the efforts of several hundred engineers, according to Sankei.

The experts did not say whether Japan should develop nuclear arms, the newspaper reported, only what such a project would require. The newspaper published a summary of the document, dated Sept 20 and titled ``On the Possibility of Developing Nuclear Weapons Domestically.''

``The government is not aware of such a document,'' Shiozaki told reporters at a regular news conference.Monday December 25, 2006 5:16 AM

Intentionally leaking ? Bluff?

War Propaganda --Half-truth, disillusion, and madness

....Upon closer examination... these portrait of the enemy reveal that sterotypess operated several ways in the war between Japan and theAgnloo-American powers. First the followed predictable patterns ofcontrainesss, in which each sideprotrayedd the other as its polar opposite as darkness opposed to its own radiant light. Second thepostivee self-images of one side were singled out....Third, ....Each raised the banner of liberation, morality, and peace.....
On the Anglo-American side, the first of these patterned stereotypes, that of the contrainessor mirror opposites , can be seen in the depiction of japan as thoroughly militaristic, repressive, irrational nation.....In the United State and the United Kingdom, the road to Pearl harbor was depicted as a one-way street; Japan provoked war and did so because of the peculiarities of its own history , culture and collectivepshychologyy. Eternal condition such as the global Depression and the emergence of quasiautarkic block economies all over the world may have abetted and accelerated these trends, but the essential causes of the war in Asia were peculiarly Japanese......
Such anti-Japanese stereotypes, however, had obvious counterparts in Japan's own propaganda about the Anglo-American enemy, where it was argued andsincerlyy believed by many that Japan was forced to go to war to defend its honor and veryexistnecee againstecnomicc and military "strangulation" by the rapacious and hypocritical "white imperialist. .....The Japanese made no mention, understandably, oftherirr own energeticactivetiess as a late-developing imperialist and colonial nation----a doubly embarassing point for them, since the victims of their own imperialism(in Formosa, Korea, and China, including Manchuria) were also, presumedly , their "blood brothers"
page 30

The southern region, embarking troops were informed in "Read This and the War is Won", was the treasure house of the Far East and a land of everlasting summer. It was also a place where a half million of British ruled 350 million Indians, and other few score thousands of Englishmen ruled 6 million Indians, and another few score thousands of Englishmen ruled 6 million Malayans; where two hundred thousand Dutchmen governed a native population of 60 million in the East Indies; where twenty thousand Frenchmen controlled 23 million Indochinese, and a few tens of thousands Americans ruled over 13 million Filipinos. Eight hundred thousand whites, the tally went, controlled 450 million Asians; if India was excluded the count was 100 million oppressed by three hundred thousand. ....p24....The Japanese were informed that Western expansion was inspired partly by love of adventure, but more by desire of local resources as well as market....."How were American Indians treated? What about African Negro?".....page26

....the report(The American-British Challenge Directed Against Nippon) launched into a detailed summary of the causes of the present conflict. The Greater East Asia War was described as "the counteroffensive of the Oriental races against Occidental aggression " and the United States was depicted as having been Japan's antagonist since the turn of the century, when it hypocritically demanded an open door in China while using the Monroe Doctrine to prohibit outsiders from interfering in the American, The decades that followed witnessed a steady increase in the anti-Japanese sentiment and activity on the part of the Americans:attempts to nuetralizee Manchuria and gain U.S. railroad rights there afterthe Russo-Japanese War; criticism of japan's postionn in China at the peace conference at Versailles in 1919; pressure to force Great Britain to give up the Anglo japanese alliance in the early 1920';the imposition of an unfavorable naval ratio at the 1921022 Washington Coferencee; anti-Japanese immigration and commercial policies; support, along with Great Britain, of Chiang Kai-shek's attack on Japan's legitimate rights and interests inMachuriaa and China, especially after the 1931 manchriann Incident.page 59

Japan's PanAsiatic slogan played upon these sentiments and the favorable response of many Asians to the initial Japanese victories against the Americans, British, and Dutch intensified Western presentiment of an all-out race war In Asia. In China, the japanese had persuaded Wang-Ching wei, formerly a respected nationalist leader, to head their puppet government. After Pearl Harbor, Indian and Burmese patriots both formed independent nationalist armies in collaboration with the Japanese, while in Indonesia pro-Japanese sentiments were expressed by the rousing triple slogan of the so called AAA movement:Japan the Leader of Asia, Japan the Protector of Asia, Japan the Light of Asia.....
Brume and the Philippines , long colonies of Britain and the United States respectively, were granted nominal independence by Japan in 1943. Occupied Indonesia was later also given independence, although the quick end of the war made the transfer of authority untidy.....Admiral Ernest King worried about the repercussions of Japanese victories "among the non-white world while Roosevelt's chief of staff Admiral William Leahy wrote in his diary about the fear that japan might "succeed i combing most of the Asiatic peoples against the white."....
.....In fact, Pan-Asian unity was a myth,....Ba Maw, dreamer of Asian blood calling Asian blood , eventually became a bitter, scathing critic of japanese "brutality, arrogance and racial pretensions," in his disillusion, as in his dreams, he was typical. ....As the self-designated leaders of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, however they prove to be as overweening as the Westerners had bee before them, and in many instances even more harsh:dominating the political scene taking over local economies, imposing broad programs of "Japanization." slapping non-Japanese in public, torturing and executing dissidents, exploiting native labor so severely that between 1942 and 1945 the death toll among such workers numbered in the hundreds of thousand. Untold millions of Asian civilians died during the brief existence of the Co-Prosperity Sphere ---from fighting atrocities, disastrous labor and economic policies and the starvation and disease that followed the war destruction.pagepage 6

....it is easy to forget how shocked the Western Powers were when the Japanese began bombing Chinese cities in 1937, and how much Japan's actions at that time served to convince most Europeans and Americans that this was a race and nation still beyond the pale of civilization. .....the Department of State denounced Japan on the grounds that "any general bombing of an extensive area wherein there resides a large population engaged in peaceful pursuits in unwarranted and contrary to principles of law and humanity. page 18

The prospect of putting Japan's cities to the torch actually had been envisioned in US military circles since shortly before Pearl Harbor,.....
Precision bombing was abandoned dramatically on the night of March 9-10, 1845, when 334 aircraft attacked Tokyo at low altitude with incendiary bombs, destroying sixteen square miles of the capital city and making more than a million people homeless. Between eighty thousand and one hundred thousand civilians died in the Tokyo raid---"scorched and boiled and baked to death" was how the mastermind of the new strategy, major General Curtis LeMay, later phrased it. The heat from the from the conflagration was so intense that in some place canals boiled, metal melted, and building and human beings burst spontaneously into flame.....By the time Japan surrendered, sixty-six cities, including Hiroshima and Nagasaki, had been subjected to both precision raids and general urban-area attacks. The exact number of civilians killed by both incendiaries and the atomic bombs is uncertain, but probably was close to four hundred thousand. page 41

Massacres of civilians by Japan's ground forces also marked the commencement of this period in 1937, and carried through to its end in 1945. ....
The Chinese people were the first victims of Japanese massacres .....it was in 1937, with the Rape of Nanjing fell on December 12 after heavy shelling and bombing, and for the next six weeks Japanese troop engaged in the widespread execution, rape, and random murder of Chinese men and women both in the captured city and outlying communities.....Much smaller killing occurred in other Chinese cities that fell into Japanese hands, including Hankow and Canton.page 43

Some of the greatest atrocity in Manila took place after MacArthur had announced the liberation of the city,......Carlos Romulo, the distinguished Filipino editor who escaped from Bataan in 1942 and returned with MacArthur's forces in 1945, described the horror of returning t find Manila "black and gutted and reeking," a "city of the tortured and the dead." "There were my neighbors and my friends whose tortured bodies I saw pushed into heaps on the Manila streets, " Romulo recorded, "their hand tied behind their backs, and bayonet stabs running through and through. This girl who looked up at me wordlessly, her young breasts crisscrossed with bayonet strokes, had been in school with my son. I saw the bodies of priests, women, children, and babies that had been bayoneted for sport, survivors told us, by a soldiery gone mad with blood lust in defeat."page 45

Although both German and Japanese atrocity stories were covered regularly in the English-language media, three incidents which received special attention in 1943 and the opening weeks of 1944 were widely interpreted as confirming that the Japanese were uniquely barbaric. ....all involved the killing of Caucasian prisoners. This was propaganda of the most sophisticated sort, turning concrete events into icons and symbols.....On the eastern front it is estimated that the Germany's took as many as 5. 5 million Soviet prisoners, of whom at least 3.5 million were were dead by mid-1944. Being more sensitive to the fate of their own countrymen, however, most citizens of the United States and the United Kingdom had a very different picture. Of 235,473 U.S and U.K prisoners reported captured by Germany and Italy together, only 4 percent(9,348) dies in the hands of their captors, whereas 27 percent of Japan's Anglo-American POWs (35,756 of 132,134) did not survive, No one had such numbers at their fingertips at the time, but the trend was clear. Thus, there was a logical explanation for the perception that the Japanese treated prisoners more brutally than the Germans, but the perception was nonetheless culture-bound and racially biased

Bullying based on race in Japan

One of the perpetrators was a male classmate of the Plaintiff’s daughter, who began taunting the victim in first and second grade with calls of “Chinky” (chuugokujin, or “Chinese”). In third grade, this boy was put in her class, and led a gang of three boy and three girl classmates to taunt her. They carried out this bullying in the open, in front of the teacher. From around May 2000, on a daily basis they began calling her “dimwit” (noroma) and “shithead” (unko), and held their noses whenever they came close to call her “stinky” (kusai). Moreover, the ringleader of this bullying gang (”A-kun”) began to inflict repeated violence, such as hitting her head, kicking her legs, and pulling on her hair. Even in class, when the victim stood up to answer a question, A-kun would heckle her, and terrorize her with public comments like “Everyone in this class hates an asshole like you!” (omae wa minna kara kirawarete iru).IJIME LAWSUIT: THE U HODEN CASE

Any sort of bully is unjustified. The girl has not reason to be bullied.
I am not sure she was bullied entirely because her father was Chinese and there might be some cases where a teacher had better leave kids' matter to the kids. but the teacher should know there are some words of bully he/she should not be tolerant about:the things you can not change by will;race is the typical case in point. Besides I think Japanese are too insensitive to race.

War without Mercy

Some quotes from War Without Mercy by John W. Dower

There is a popular belief that men who have experienced combat and been fortunate enough to survive return home to regale their cronies with war stories. In fact, many have seen and done such terrible things that they choose not to recall them at all. They turn to the building of a new life and attempt to bury the past. It is only after the passage of years that the past resurfaces and demand to be re-encountered. ...Thus , J Glenn Gray, in his reflective 1959 study The Warriors, recalled how a few years earlier a veteran reminisced before a class of students about how his unit had unexpected "flushed" an isolated Japanese soldier on an island that had already secured, and amused themselves by shooting at him as he dashed frantically about the clearing in search of safety;....This solitary death is not identical to the execution of the Allied airman in New Guinea. It lacks the diarist. The Japanese soldier was technically not a prisoner, although he was helpless...(p62)

....The popular American writer William Manchester, in Goodbye, Darkness, his 1980 memoir of fighting in the Pacific, recalled a young American soldier on Okinawa, crazed by the death of a revered commander, who "snatched up a submachine gun and unforgivably massacred a line of unarmed Japanese soldiers who had just surrendered." The military historian Denis Warner, in a book about Japanese suicide units published in 1982, introduced in passing his own firsthand experience on Bougainville, where wounded Japanese attempting to surrender were ordered shot by the American commander.

But sir, they are wounded and want to surrender," a colonel protested to [a major general] at the edge of the cleared perimeter after a massive and unsuccessful Japanese attack.
"You heard me, Colonel." replied{the major general],who was only yards away from up-stretched Japanese hands. "I want no prisoner. Shoot them all."
They were shot.

In a thoughtful memoir published by Presidia Press in 1981, professor E.B. Sledge, an American biologist, painfully recalled .....:severing the hand of a dead Japanese as a battlefield trophy, "harvesting gold teeth" from the enemy dead, urinating in a corpse's upturned mouth, shooting a terrified old Okinawan woman and casually dismissing her as "just an old gook woman who wanted me to put her out of her misery".More terrifying still, Sledge found himself coming close to accepting such conduct as normal.(p63)

....... "What kind of war do civilians suppose we fought, anyway?" asked Edger L. , Jones, a former American war correspondent in the Pacific, in the February 1946 issue of Atlantic Monthly, "We shot prisoners in cold blood, wiped out hospitals, strafed lifeboats, killed or mistreated enemy civilians, finished off for the enemy wounded, tossed the dying into a hole with the dead, and in the Pacific boiled the fulesh off enemy skull to make table ornaments for sweethearts or carved their bones into letter openers." Jones went on to speak of such practices as adjusting flamethrowers so that took care to attribute such behavior to the nature of modern war itself, and to emphasize that it was done by all sides ,but by no means condoned by all or even most fighting men.(p64)

Despite the attention given in Allied propaganda to Hideyoshi's three-and-a half century-old ear mound, in the current war in Asia it was Allied combatants who collected ears. Like collecting gold teeth, this practice was no secret......p65

...Of greater interest is what the reminiscences cited earlier reveal; that many men in the field participated in or at least witness the killing of helpless, wounded, or captured Japanese. Here again, behavior which was presented to Western audiences as revealing the unique and inherent savagery of the Japanese occurred on both sides.
.....
Some massacres of Japanese, like that of the wounded soldiers attempting to surrender on Bougainvillea, were ordered to take place by Allied officers, or at least received tacit support from superior officers after the event. A U.S. submarine commander who sank a Japanese transport and then spent upwards of an hour killing the hundreds and possibly thousands of Japanese survivors with his deck guns, for example, was commended and publicly honored by his superiors even though he included an account of the slaughter in his official report.....p66

....An equally grim butchery took place on March 4, 1943, the day after the three day battle of the Bismarck Sea, when the U. S and Australian aircraft systematically searched the scars fro Japanese survivors and strafed every raft and lifeboat they found. "It was rather a sloppy job, ....and some the boys got sick. But that is something you have to learn. The enemy is out to kill you and you are out to kill the enemy . You can't be sporting in a war .p67
.....
What is often overlooked, however, is that countless thousands of Japanese perished because they had no alternative. In a report dated June 1945, the U.S. Office of War information noted that 84% of one group of interrogated Japanese prisoners(many of them injured or unconscious when captured) stated that they had expected to be killed or tortured by the Allies if taken prisoner. .....
As the American analysts themselves acknowledged, these Japanese fears were not irrational, In many battle, neither Allied fighting men nor their commanders wanted many POWs. This was not official policy,,...over wide reaches of the Asian battleground it was everyday practice...An article published by a U.S. Army captain shortly after the war, for example, carried the proud title "The 41st Didn't Take Prisoners.,".....The reputation of not taking prisoners also became associated with Australian troops in general. In many instances, moreover, Japanese who did become prisonerss were killed on the spot or en route to the prisoner compounds.p69

On May 18, 1944, about two weeks after Lindbergh had tied in with a Marine unit, he recorded that the camps were full of reports of Japanese torture and beheading of captured American pilots. A month later, on June 21, he summarized the conversation of an American general who told an unsuspecting Japanese prisoner was given a cigarette and then seized from behind and has his throat "slit from ear to ear" as a
demonstration of how to kill Japanese. Lindbergh's objection were treated with tolerant scorn and pity. The journal entry for June 26 told of a massacre of Japanese prisoners and of Japanese airmen being shot in their parachutes. Of several thousand prisoners taken at a certain place, Lindbergh was informed, "only a hundred or two were turned in . ......The entry for June 28 spoke of kicking in the teeth of Japanese sometimes before and sometimes after executing them.
On July 13, Lindbergh wrote, "It was freely admitted that some of our soldiers tortured Jap prisoners and were as cruel and barbaric at times as the Japs themselves. Our men think nothing of shooting a Japanese prisoner of a soldier attempting to surrender.
On August 6, Lindbergh described the blackboard in the pilot's alert tent, with a naked girl choked in at the bottom and a Japanese skull hung on the top. A few days later, he wrote that when the word went out to take Japanese prisoners , and was accompanied by the material inducements, incentive for doing this. He reported the slaughter of all inmates of a Japanese hospital, and went on to mention that the Australians often threw Japanese out of airplanes on their way to prison compounds and then reported that they had committed hara-kiri.p69

Allied propagandists were not distorting the history of Japan when they pointed to much that was cruel in the Japanese past. They had to romanticize or simply forget their own history.....(p73)
..........................................................................
When an army captain infromed him in January 1945 that U.S. troops in the field were routinely killing Japanese who were attempting to surrender, Fellers deplored this on rather techinical grounds. Since the Americans were dropping leaflets urging Japanese to surrender, he felt it "a matter of national honor that we make good our word, most of all with the enemy.....Where the U.S satuaration bombing of Japanese cities were concerned, however his condemnation was unqualified. In the internal memorandum dated June 17, 1945, Fellers described this as "one of the most ruthless and barbaric killing of non-combatants in all histroy. As the war in Asia drew to its terrible denouncement, he also forthrightly characterized it as a race war. "The war in Europ was both political and social, " he wrote one week before surrender, whereas "th war in the Pacific was racial."p285 Embracing Defeat

Churchihill told his commander in Malaya that Singapre had to be "defended to the dath" and that no surrender can be contemplated. The battle , he ordered in another directive, must be fought to the bitter end . Commanders and officers should die with their troops. General Archibald Wavell conveyed these orders in smilarly unequivocal terms. "Commanders and senior officers must lead their troops and if necessary die with them.

American troops 'murdered Japanese PoWs'

American and Australian soldiers massacred Japanese prisoners of war, according to one of the most detailed studies of memoirs of the Second World War in the Pacific, published this week.

It also discloses that the soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army were far from the cruel, mindless troops of popular legend, and that Gen Douglas MacArthur wanted to launch nuclear strikes on the Soviet Union from an underground airstrip in Britain.
A US Navy lieutenant with a Japanese skull used as a mascot

In The Faraway War, published to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima atom bomb and of VJ Day, Prof Richard Aldrich of Nottingham University has gathered the diaries of men and women from across the Pacific war front, from the common soldier to the highest general.

He said: "We have this stereotypical idea that the Japanese were all cruel and robotic while the Allied forces were tough but fair in their treatment of the enemy.

"But I was very surprised by much of what I found and had to rethink all those stereotypes."

Prof Aldrich found several examples confirming what became an American policy in some parts of the Pacific theatre not to take prisoners of war.

He quotes the diaries of Charles Lindbergh, the American aviation pioneer, who toured the Far East visiting United States units. On one occasion he commented to a group of senior officers that very few Japanese seemed to be taken prisoner.

"Oh, we could take more if we wanted to," one of the officers replied. "But our boys don't like to take prisoners.

"It doesn't encourage the rest to surrender when they hear of their buddies being marched out on the flying field and machine-guns turned loose on them."

Although Lindbergh was sympathetic to the Nazis and was suspected of deliberately portraying his fellow countrymen in a very negative light, his allegations are supported by other American diarists, who report that the US marines, in particular, did not take many prisoners. Prof Aldrich also discovered new diaries showing that American generals worried about the abuse of human remains by their troops.

They were particularly concerned that the skulls of dead Japanese soldiers were often displayed as gruesome mascots by some units, while US marines made a speciality of collecting ears.

Australian troops are also shown not to like taking prisoners. Prof Aldrich quotes the 1943 diary of Eddie Stanton, an Australian posted to Goodenough Island off Papua New Guinea. "Japanese are still being shot all over the place," he wrote. "The necessity for capturing them has ceased to worry anyone. Nippo soldiers are just so much machine-gun practice. Too many of our soldiers are tied up guarding them."

The book also features the memoir of a New Zealand soldier working with a Fijian regiment who came across the bodies of two native women, pegged out on an earthen mound.

They had been "raped to death" by Japanese soldiers. Then they found a dead American soldier who had stakes driven through each shoulder and his hands cut off. "As we moved away again, one of my corporals said to me: "No more prisoners, turaga[sir]." I agreed with him.''

Prof Aldrich has found Japanese diaries that belie the common perceptions that soldiers or even low-ranking officers were automata devoted fanatically to their emperor and the codes of bushido, hara-kiri and kamikaze.

"One young officer praises America and its ideas of democracy and modernity, while on another occasion a Japanese soldier voices out loud his envy of some Germans who had set up a sort of peacenik camp on New Guinea to get away from the war," Prof Aldrich said. One of the most bizarre episodes recorded was when Field Marshal Lord Alanbrook, the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, visited Gen MacArthur, the American who commanded allied occupation troops in Japan, in November 1945.

He recorded, with some approbation and agreement, MacArthur's view that "we should assemble at least 1,000 atomic bombs in England and in the States. We must then prepare a safe aerodrome by tunnelling into the side of a mountain so that we shall be able to go on operating from England even when attacked".

He also recorded Macarthur's view of the Soviet Union. "He felt certain they would also attempt to convert Japan into a subject county, so as to be able to use the Japanese manpower at a later date for operations in the Pacific.

"He considered them a greater menace than the Nazis had ever been, complete barbarians, as exemplified by one commander [in Manchuria] who had issued orders that every woman between the age of 16 and 60 was to be raped twice by Russian soldiery as an example of the superiority of the Russian race!

"Macarthur considers that they should be met by force if necessary and not by conciliatory methods which were only interpreted as weakness by the Russians."

Sushi in Paris

'Japanese sushi' mania in France overrun by cheap Chinese copies

PARIS (AFP) - Raw fish and rice is not exactly the cuisine you would expect to find on every street corner in Paris but sushi is becoming almost as commonplace here as France's beloved steak and chips.

In fact, a whopping 90 percent of Japanese-style restaurants in France are thought to be Chinese-owned.

Saito, who has been a sushi chef for 15 years, is convinced that the explosion of 'copy-cat' restaurants has tarnished the image of Japanese cuisine and that the newcomers' food is simply not up to scratch.

"I can tell you that it's completely different. It's up to you to compare the two but for we Japanese, we can tell the difference immediately."

While the Japanese may consider their food superior, Saito conceded the Chinese were far better at making the cash registers ring.

The Japanese are not the only ones unhappy with the transformation of so many Chinese restaurants.

"I went out for Chinese food yesterday evening but all the Chinese restaurants I know in my neighbourhood now all serve sushi. In the end, I just went home," remarked Marie Hospital who lives in eastern Paris.

It's a lament often heard in Paris these days.yahooThu Dec 21

I don't care about Chinese sushi or Korean shushi, but what is notable is French people show positive and favorable understanding of Japan. They also seem to love Otaku
Great, does that mean the soft power of Japan reaching France?

Abductee’s Family in South Korea

“In South Korea the abductees to North Korea and their families are criminals, not victims.”

“During the dictatorship years they made use of us in their anti-communism campaign for a while, but soon shifted to oppressing us that [the kidnapped] might return as a spy, and after democratization they neglected us, fearing the mood of North Korea. Whatever is the state of those kidnapped to North Korea and their families?” Se-cheol cried out.

I don't understand it.
Koreans are said to be nice to victims---it is the other side of their victim mentality.
But abductee's family are victim, then why do they treat them as criminals??

Koreangeist

A court has twice rejected arrest warrants for six people who led protests against a Korea-U.S. free trade agreement, paralyzing traffic and assaulting police officers, on grounds that there was no flight risk or fear that they will destroy evidence. Prosecutors say that ignores public demand for an end to illegal protests.

Most people have had it up to here with the habitual, violent and illegal protests that bedevil Korea. To deal with illegal protests, courts must apply the law strictly, from reviewing arrest warrants to trial. The court’s refusal to grant arrest warrants for illegal protestors flies in the face of public sentiment. In the last three years, courts have not jailed a single one of the 91 defendants who came before them charged with violating the laws on assembly and protest. That is enough to give rise to concerns that the courts, too, know which side their bread is buttered under a progressive government.Chosunilbo

Yasukuni and the relation with China

Shrine authorities agreed in October to alter text on display in the museum stating that the United States deliberately forced Japan into the war. The new display panels on the U.S. role in the war will be installed next month, the Mainichi said.

At the time the shrine said it saw no need to change references to China, but a shrine panel has now decided revisions are needed, the paper said.

The exhibition currently says, for example, that the Marco Polo Bridge incident -- the 1937 battle near Beijing that marked the beginning of the second Sino-Japanese war -- was sparked by Chinese nationalist troops’ illegal attacks on the Japanese, the Mainichi said.

“There is no mistake in the facts, but the expressions are such that some parts could be misunderstood, so we will substitute softer expressions,” the daily Mainichi Shimbun quoted a source involved in the revisions as saying of the references to China.

The shrine intends to refer to Chinese as well as Japanese texts in preparing the new exhibits, it said.

A spokeswoman for the Yasukuni Shrine said revisions were being made at the museum but declined to comment on their content.

North Korea related news

December 1 5, 2006: A survey of North Korean refugees in China revealed that 40 percent of them had never encountered any foreign food aid, and that nearly all of them left North Korea because of food shortages. There are believed to be at least 100,000 North Korean refugees in northern China, all of them there illegally. North Korea has turned down more food aid recently, because the aid had to be accompanied by inspectors to make sure that the food got to the people who needed it.

December 13, 2006: In the last month, there has been an increase in violence against North Koreans working in eastern Russia (adjacent to North Korea). At least two North Koreans have been beaten to death, and many more injured. North Korea basically provides very low cost labor to Russian companies. North Korea then keeps most of the money the workers do earn, meaning that the workers are basically enslaved. Local Russians resent these labor practices, as it lowers wages in general, and deprives Russians of employment opportunities.

December 8, 2006: South Korea indicted five people on charges of spying for North Korea. One of those charged is a Korean-American, two others are officials of a leftist South Korean political party. This is the largest North Korean spy operation to be discovered in the past five years. This spy ring was seeking military information, especially details on the current reorganization of U.S. forces in South Korea.Military news

The prosecutors named U.S. citizen Michael Jang, 44, as the ring leader, saying they suspect him of first making contact with North Korean agents in 1998 in China.

Jang is suspected of passing on directives from the North to junior ring leaders including calls to intensify anti-U.S. demonstrations timed to U.S. President George W. Bush's visit to South Korea last year to attend an Asia-Pacific summit, the prosecution said.washingtonpost

But why does this Korean American want to fuel Anti-Americanism?

Nowhere to call home: Life as a Korean-American gyopo

NHK

An NHK staff was arrested for molesting a young Japanese male student in the train.
He was suspected of toughing the buttocks of the male student and the victim arrested him. The culprit apologized and admitted the guilty.
NHK comments:it is regrettable that our staff was arrested and we express the apology for the viewers.

I am sure some bloggers are waiting for the English newspaper in Japan publishing it and and they will surely pick up the topic.
Enjoy!

Christianity in Japan

I once wrote that in Japan nihilism is rampant. Here is how.
Many (Japanese) have looked to the economy to fill their 'God vacuum.'

But recently it's been faltering, and many jaded Japanese have lost hope.

One Japanese, called Kiku, explained, "But now we have everything, but what is lacking is purpose. Why are we here? We can't answer the question 'who are you?' unless we know the Creator God -- then everything makes sense."

"There is what you might call a 'dark night of the soul' to use that phrase to describe the Japanese right now," said renowned researcher George Gallup, Jr.

In fact, Gallup found that 11 percent of the Japanese wish they had never even been born.

That's reflected in the country's unusually high suicide rate.

But here is a good a news for Japan.

researchers believe it could definitely mean Japanese hearts are softening toward the Gospel.

One of the reasons why so many Japanese feel they can associate themselves with Christianity is the popularity of Western or Christian-style weddings......Another reason the Japanese are softening up to the message of the Bible is the incredible phenomenon of black Gospel music.

Believe it or not, the reserved Japanese love the toe-tapping, finger-snapping, always swaying music.

Gospel music singer Garrison Davis has lived in Japan for eight years.

Kiku said, "God says, 'You are precious in My sight, I love you.' And that is a key word for Japan. Everybody is looking for their value, worth, state of worth, but God says, 'You are valuable.'"CBN

Isn't God one of myriad ofKami (yaorozu no kami) that stay at wind and thunder; natural objects like the sun, mountains, rivers, trees, and rocks; some animals; and ancestral spirits for them?

Will the tree of Christianity grow at last?

Or

A tree which flourishes in one kind of soil may wither if the soil is changed. As for the tree of Christianity, in a foreign country its leaves may grow thick and the buds may be rich, while in Japan the leaves wither and no bud appears. Father, have you never thought of the difference in the soil, the difference in the water?Endo/silence

The rest is silence.

China Taiwan and North Korea

December 10, 2006: Despite a major corruption scandal, the independence party in Taiwan held its own in local elections. The pro-China KMT party made some gains, but not enough to reassure Chinese politicians. Public opinion in Taiwan continues to move towards a declaration of independence. The threat of Chinese invasion does not appear to be stopping down this trend.

Okay, go for it Taiwan. I'll support you. How about shanghai? don't you want the independence?

December 9, 2006: Chinese generals say they have no plans for military intervention in North Korea. Meanwhile, more Chinese troops are sent to the North Korean border each month, in anticipation of a political collapse across the border. That would bring a huge wave of refugees, and the growing army of Chinese soldiers are prepared to stop as many of the refugees as possible. Military news

So what is China up to ?
