yasukuni

Koizumi's visits to the shrine in central Tokyo have soured relations with China, South Korea and other Asian countries. The governments of China and South Korea have said the visits show Japan hasn't fully atoned for the atrocities committed when the Japanese occupied much of Asia before defeat in WWII.

Koizumi has visited Yasukuni, which means peaceful nation in Japanese, five times since becoming prime minister in 2001. A visit in October last year prompted South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun to scrap a summit with the Japanese leaderbloomberg
