Shimane Pref.'s website gets massive number of hits from S. Korea(Kyodo) _ The website of the Shimane prefectural government, which is involved in a territorial row over South Korean-controlled islets in the Sea of Japan, received about 2.1 million hits Wednesday, about 130 times of the daily average, from IP addresses assigned in South Korea, prefectural officials said Thursday.

The prefectural government also received about 1,100 e-mails saying in Japanese, Korean and English "Dokdo is South Korea's territory" from a certain IP address in about 10 minutes from around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, the officials said.

As many as 100 hits per second were made from around 9 a.m. Wednesday, making it difficult for other people to connect to the website, the officials said.

The prefecture denied Internet access from specific IP addresses starting around noon that day, but accesses were made from other IP addresses in South Korea, the officials said.kyodo/ June 1,
